Have you ever stood in the middle of a bustling city, surrounded by towering relics of the past and contemporary wonders, and wondered, “Why on earth do Germans form a queue for just about anything and wait so patiently for their turn?” If so, then welcome to my bizarre yet captivating experience in Berlin, the heart of Germany!

Brandenburger Tor

Berlin, a city with a history that captivates me like a season in Nat Geo Wild. A city that emerged from the fragments of numerous city-states over 150 years ago, emerging as a global powerhouse with a historical track record that screams drama and dynamism. It stands as a global behemoth, a testament to resilience and the triumph of unity over division. Take a walk with me #awtsyde as we delve into the historical landmarks of Berlin that I got to see, we will discover the city’s captivating contrasts and explore the remnants of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of both division and unity.

The Berlin Wall: From Division to Unity

Video Take at the Wall

Our first stop on this journey is the Berlin Wall, or rather, what’s left of it, an iconic structure that once separated East and West Berlin. As we approach the remnants of this monumental barrier, we are confronted with the stark reality that contradicts our preconceived notions. Picture my anticipation as I stood, ready to witness the imposing symbol of division, fully expecting a one-meter-thick fortress of concrete. Oh, what a bubble burst it was! Instead, I was greeted by a remarkably slim remnant that left my expectations as crushed as a squashed Sauerkraut (a German dish of chopped pickled cabbage).

Sauerkraut

A stern reminder that tall tales often come with even taller exaggerations. The wall, now a mere fragment of its former self, stands as a powerful reminder of the city’s tumultuous past. It serves as a testament to the resilience of the Berliners, who have transformed a symbol of division into a thriving city that embraces unity.

I read the history that was carefully documented on information boards with timelines as I made my way from one end of what’s left of the wall to the other and my disappointment was quickly replaced by my appreciation for the metaphorical significance of the Wall and the stark contrast it presented to Berlin’s current state.. Berlin is a wonderfully orchestrated symphony, where each historical note blends harmoniously into the vibrant tune of the present. Talk about rhythm!

Exploring Berlin’s Historical Landmarks

Beyond the Berlin Wall, Berlin boasts a wealth of historical landmarks that bear witness to its rich and complex past. From:

The majestic Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), a symbol of German reunification. The gate stood as a grand entrance to the city.

Checkpoint Charlie, once the best-known border crossing between East and West Berlin, it served as the only crossing point for foreigners and Allied forces.

The iconic German Bundestag/Reichstag building, where the German Parliament convenes, with its stunning glass dome. It is an architectural marvel, each site tells a unique story.

Germans: A Fascinating Culture of Order and Resilience

Now let’s talk about Germans from my own point of view. You’ve got to love them, right? No? Well, personally I do, some do, and some don’t. But you can’t deny they are a fascinating bunch, and their way of life is intriguing enough to keep you guessing. Why on earth do they love everything in order? Do they come out of the womb, pointing at scattered toys, declaring “Ordnung muss sein” (There must be order)? Probably. And their obsession with punctuality. I swear, if you’re not five minutes early in Germany, you’re already too late (at least from the clients I have worked with so far)

Germany: Rising from the Ashes with Resilience

So why do the Germans do things the way they do? Why does this nation, which has had its share of historical hiccups, continue to serve as a model for others to emulate? I guess it all comes down to their resiliency, their ability to adapt, and their belief in “Ordnung muss sein”. They have mastered the art of rising from the ashes, rebuilding, and pressing forward. It’s as if Germany looked at the rest of the world and said, “Hold my beer!” 🍺😂

Rebuilding and Moving Forward

Germany’s post-war reconstruction was a remarkable feat of resilience and determination. The country embraced the challenge of rebuilding its cities, infrastructure, and economy with unwavering resolve. From the ruins of war, Germany emerged as an economic powerhouse, a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people.

As we navigate our way through the enchanting maze of Berlin’s history, let’s take a pause and appreciate the wonders that the city has accomplished, all while retaining its charm, order, and resilience. Yet, in the symphony of progress, there is always room for a new note, a fresh melody.

The first improvement could be the ease and transparency of starting a business. Y’all know how ruthlessly ambitious I am and I have been exploring how to include Germany as a satellite location for awtsyde. While the Germans excel at many things, the bureaucratic labyrinth one has to navigate to become an entrepreneur can sometimes feel like a descent, into Kafka’s castle. Streamlining this process would certainly make Germany an even brighter beacon for global innovation.🙏🏾

Secondly, the integration of foreigners. I have had my share of navigating the paperwork and official onboarding which are all in German. Germany is home to an increasingly diverse population, and yet, not speaking German can often feel like not having the secret password to a clandestine club. Enhancing inclusivity and accessibility for non-German speakers will only enrich the vibrant cultural tapestry of this extraordinary country.

On our journey through Berlin’s rich history and vibrant culture, we are left with a profound appreciation for the resilience and spirit of the German people. Berlin, a city that seamlessly blends the old with the new, stands as a testament to the power of unity and the triumph of the human spirit. So, the next time you find yourself in Berlin or Germany as a whole, take a moment to embrace the precision, the order, and the “German-ness” of it all. Let our tour through Berlin inspire you to turn your own walls into bridges, your scars into stories, and your past into pillars of strength. Even if you’re a few minutes late to that realization, remember that resilience knows no time constraints.

Conclusion

To my brothers and sisters, friends, and anyone reading this, wherever you find yourselves, like the city itself, may we also continue to evolve, improve, and remember that we’re all patiently waiting in the queue of life, building bridges where walls once stood.

Here’s to the past that shaped us, the present that inspires us, and the future that awaits us. Prost! (Cheers in German)🍻
